The MEC Alternative Art Gallery

McMurdo, Antarctica

The MEC Alternative Art Gallery, or MAAG, is the southernmost art gallery in the world.  It is located in downtown McMurdo Station, Antartica at the Mechanical Equipment Center, or the MEC.  While the MEC is generally responsible for loaning generators, trucks, and tracked vehicles to scientists and support staff, it has become known as a mecca for many established and aspiring local artists.

MAAG began as an underground movement in 1997 to provide a venue for cutting edge multimedia art work.

The Collections represent a cross-section of artists.  From the well-known whimsical batiks of Carolyn Doe to the abstract paintings of JP Murad.
