MAAG 2001: FIRE AND ICE

The MEC Alternative Art Gallery, or MAAG, is the southernmost art gallery in the world.  It is located in McMurdo Station, Antarctica at the Mechanical Equipment Center, or the MEC.  While the MEC is generally responsible for loaning generators, trucks, and tracked vehicles to scientists and support staff, it has become known as a Mecca for many established and aspiring local artists.

The MAAG began as an underground movement in 1997 to provide a venue for cutting edge multimedia art work. The MEC Alternative Art Gallery offers an opportunity for McMurdo's artists to express their talents in ways that challenge the conventional, prosaic forms of art.

This year's theme, Fire and Ice, reflects the nature of Antarctica and the region surrounding McMurdo Station. 

The only limitation is the imagination of the artist.
